Privacy policy

Your trips stay on your phone.

Effective 3 November 2026 · Applies to SpeedGuard GH for Android and iOS

SpeedGuard GH ("the app") is a driver aid that shows your speed against the legal limit and warns you before you exceed it. This policy explains what the app collects, why, where it goes, and how to delete it. The short version: the app has no accounts, collects nothing it does not need to work, keeps your data on your device by default, and only sends anything off the phone when you turn on an optional feature.

1. Who is responsible

The app is published by the SpeedGuard GH project ("we"). Contact details are on the support page. We are the data controller for the limited data described here.

2. What the app collects and why

DataWhenWhyWhere it is stored
Precise location (GPS position, speed, heading, accuracy)Only while you have started monitoring, including with the screen lockedTo calculate your speed, work out the speed limit for the road you are on, and alert youOn your phone. Positions are saved as part of a trip only while a trip is being recorded
Trip records (route, speed over time, maximum speed, time over the limit, over-limit episodes, estimated fine)Automatically from 30 seconds after you start moving above 10 km/h until you stop for 5 minutesSo you can review your driving in History and InsightsOn your phone. Uploaded only if you turn on cloud backup (section 4)
Zones you mark (a name you type, a position, a radius, a limit)When you add a zone in SettingsTo apply your preferred limit at that placeOn your phone. Shared only if you turn on cloud backup, and then without any identifier other than a random device key
Camera reports (a position and a time)Only when you tap "Report camera here"To warn you, and other drivers if three independent reports agreeOn your phone; sent to our server with a random device key when you report one
Settings (warning margin, voice language, night mode and similar)As you change themTo remember your preferencesOn your phone
Random device key (a UUID generated on first use)Only if you enable cloud backup or camera reportsTo group your own uploads together on the serverOn your phone and, once used, on our server

The app does not collect your name, phone number, email address, vehicle registration, driver's licence, contacts, photos, advertising identifiers or any payment information. There are no accounts and no sign-in.

3. Permissions the app asks for

4. Optional features that send data off your phone

Each of these is off by default and can be switched off again at any time in Settings.

Cloud backup

When enabled, finished trips and any zones you mark are uploaded to our server (hosted on Supabase, in the European Union), keyed only by the random device key. We use them to restore your history if you reinstall, and your approved zone corrections to improve the next monthly map for all users. Turning cloud backup off stops further uploads; previously uploaded trips can be deleted on request (section 7).

Camera reports and camera alerts

Tapping "Report camera here" sends the current position, the time and the random device key to our server. Enabling camera alerts downloads the list of locations that at least three independent devices have reported. We never upload your route to provide this feature, only the single point you chose to report.

Map tiles

When you open a trip's route, the map is drawn from OpenStreetMap tiles fetched from OpenStreetMap servers. Those requests include the tile coordinates (which reveal the area of the map being viewed) and your IP address, under the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy. Tiles are cached on your phone so a route viewed once can be viewed again offline.

Monthly map update

Once a month, on Wi-Fi, the app downloads an updated speed-limit map file from our server. The request contains no personal data beyond your IP address.

5. Platform services

On Android the app uses Google Play services' Fused Location Provider to obtain location fixes; on iOS it uses Apple Core Location and Apple Maps (MapKit) for trip maps. Those services operate under Google's and Apple's privacy policies respectively. The app contains no analytics, crash-reporting or advertising SDKs.

6. Retention

7. Your rights and how to delete your data

We process data under Ghana's Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) and, for users in the EU/UK, the GDPR. Our legal basis is your consent for the optional features and our legitimate interest in providing the core speed-warning function you asked for by starting monitoring. You may complain to the Data Protection Commission of Ghana or your local supervisory authority.

8. Children

The app is intended for licensed drivers aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has used the app with cloud backup enabled, contact us and we will delete the records.

9. Security

Data on your phone is protected by the device's own storage sandbox. Uploads use HTTPS. Server access is restricted by row-level security so that an anonymous client can only insert its own records and read the approved camera list; nobody can list trips through the public interface.

10. Changes to this policy

We will post changes here and update the effective date above. Changes that expand what the app collects will also be announced inside the app before they take effect.

11. Contact

Use the channels on the support page. Please do not send device keys or personal details through public GitHub issues; use the private contact instead.
